I did a truly scary thing and entered Quentin’s silhouette portrait quilt into the Minnesota Quilters quilt show as a judged entry! When I decided to enter it, I let go of any expectation to place since there are plenty of little technical things I did not do, like thread burying, when making it since I didn’t have showing in mind. I hate thread burying. Death to thread burying! This is all to say I am expecting a billion notes from the judges that I cannot wait to read. I have the quilt back already and judging is completed, and the official show will take place virtually June 9-12. Since I’ve never entered anything in a show before, this is an entirely new experience for me, and I am really looking forward to some honest feedback about what can be improved. Especially since…
Filming has begun on my new endeavor, the Silhouette Portrait Quilt Class! I have developed A Peek Inside (what I titled the quilt when I entered it into the MQ show) into a series. The second silhouette I’ve done is of my beautiful niece, and I have more in the works.
There are so many possible ways to create a lovely memento with these techniques. I plan to cover as many of them as I can in the class! It will be available through my website asynchronously, which you can go through the class at your own pace. Lessons will cover creation of a silhouette template from a photo or already drawn silhouette, fabric choice and piecing, a variety of cutting and appliqué techniques, and suggestions for quilting/finishing. I will do something like hold office hours at certain times online so that I have a chance to meet and interact with anyone who takes the class. Expect to look for the class launch on July 12, because that is one of my sisters’ birthdays and I work better when I put myself on a deadline.
I am so excited for this! Filming is taking place in my living room, and Quentin will definitely get a producer credit. He produces a lot. Of mess.
In other news, my next quilt pattern is almost ready to for testing! The idea for Moons Akimbo started a few months ago while The Kitchen Sink was in the testing phase, and I’ve made a few versions before settling on this size and layout. I love that the curve is a simple and easy one, and every block is the same. And yet, out of this simplicity comes a lovely evocation of the changing phases and seasons with a careful choice of colors and values.
The Moons Akimbo pattern will release just before the Silhouette Portrait Quilt Class, on Thursday July 8th. July is gonna be a big month for me!
Beautiful design. I am very impressed with all of your designs and color choices. So glad my daughter, M. Bryn Schut, steered me to your sight. Hoping to take your classes. Keep up the good works.
Thank you so much, Deborah! I’ll thank Bryn for sending you my way too 🙂
Oh Karoline, what lovely adventures in color, texture, subject, innovation, etc., you have begun and continued–organically–and in/on which youve invited us all to join you! I’m learning and being inspired. This is great fun–thank you!
Lots of love 💙🙌🌷 A.M.
Thanks Aunt Maggie ❤️
P.S. As a poet, I am moved by passion generated by and emanating from many sources. However, creative art that is directly connected with human experience and interaction (and love) and from love of the natural world is especially meaningful to me. Your work–and play–says those things to me.
You are in the midst of IT, whatever it is–what a ride!
😊
It is very exciting! I remember a conversation we had a long time ago about being connected to the cycles of the moon. You have been a great example for making meaningful connections with nature, I think your influence had a great impact on how I think about my art!
